Why is AG pathetically playing the blame game?

first_imgDear Editor,No Attorney General in the history of the Caribbean has had his/her competence, suitability and performance so vigorously challenged and questioned by the public and the media than Basil Williams. This by itself is an indictment. Even the President was forced to come out and bat for him recently. On every occasion that he is found wanting, he finds someone to blame, most times me, in order to shift blame away from himself.Recently, the Press zeroed in on his dismal performance and queried the number of case which the State has lost since he assumed Office. Two and a half years after I left Office, he pathetically continues to blame me for very straight forward and elementary cases which the State lost. The truth is that incompetence and ignorance of law cannot win cases whether the cases are good or bad.In any event and for the record, I left no bad or weak cases at the Attorney- General Chambers. I settled most cases of that nature, so as to avoid wasting the Court’s time resources and that of the State. Lawyers at the practicing Bar can attest to this.Invoking my name, therefore, was his usual modus operandi to which the Press and the public have become quite accustomed. Apart from the cases which he allegedly “inherited,” he lost almost every case of substance filed against State, since he assumed Office. It is public knowledge that that I filed several of those cases and they were successful. That is now public knowledge. Indeed, the last time I checked, the AG Chambers owes my Office and my clients millions of dollars in outstanding judgements and costs in respect of cases filed and won over the last twoand a half year. The Learned Attorney General should have been full and frank with the Press and inform them the he personally drafted the application to the Caribbean Court of Justice in the multi million dollars case involving Dipcon Engineering Inc. When the Court dismissed said Application as being the wrong procedure employed and wrong documents filed, he then denied to the Staff at AG’ Chambers that he drafted the documents, accusing them of forging his signature! He should have also explained that in the Berbice Sangha case, he refused to settle the case by rejecting an offer of $7 million. He ended up losing the case with Judgement being awarded against the State for over $30 million dollars; nearly five times more!As Mr Williams continues to mislead the public on these matters and blame others for his misdeeds, I will continue to set the record straight. After all, it is my parliamentary duty do so.Sincerely,Anil NandlallFormer AttorneyGenerallast_img read more

Koffa Task Force Regains Prosecution Power

first_imgThe Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa-led Special Presidential Task Force (SPTF) investigating the damning Global Witness (GW) report on senior Liberian government officials has once again been given its teeth to bite. Few days after President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf setup the SPTF, it forced two of the most powerful men in the nation to appear in court to answer to corruption allegations. Senator Cllr. Varney Sherman, Chairman of the ruling Unity Party (UP) and Mr. J. Alex Tyler, Speaker of the House of Representatives appeared in court and each was allowed to go home after they had filed in ‘criminal appearance bonds’ over US$1 million combined. Ordinary Liberians began praising Cllr. Koffa, who is also Minister of State Without Portfolio, for having the will to bring alleged corrupt officials to court. However, people were left dismayed when Minister Koffa announced on Thursday, June 2, that he has handed the prosecutorial role of the SPTF over to the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), a member of the SPTF, which is a tripartite conglomeration, the other two being the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs (MOS) and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).But late Wednesday, June 8, evening reports surfaced that Justice Minister Frederick Cherue had written Cllr. Koffa and re-assigned the prosecution of persons indicted by his Task Force. It is reported that Justice Minister Cherue, in a letter to Cllr. Koffa dated June 6, advised him to “proceed to investigate and prosecute those found to be criminally responsible for the allegations contained in the Global Witness Report.” The Justice Minister further granted Cllr. Koffa the “Letter of Patent” required by law to serve as a Special Prosecutor for the Global Witness case. According to reports, Minister Cherue stated that his Ministry is already working closely with the Task Force in the matter, and that it is still “willing to provide additional lawyers as well as other assistance to aid the work of the Task Force in ensuring that the case is resolved.” Meanwhile, the Task Force is expected to announce another batch of indictees Thursday, during a special press conference at the Information Ministry. Packed Brickdam Cathedral left astounded by recent youth musical show

first_imgDear Editor,We have admired the agile cast of Jesus Christ Superstar: persons such as Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Yvonne Elliman, Barry Dennen and so on. This melodious and inspiring musical play is directed by Norma Jewison, and has become the favourite of many Christians and non-Christians alike because of its soothing lyrics and music.A group of amateur young persons brought this play to our shores when they performed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at Brickdam on Saturday last. This was directed by Paul Budhna and Ron Robinson, and the cast comprised young persons from different churches in Georgetown. They performed to a packed Cathedral, their melodious little voices filling the hearts and minds of the audience. They astounded us with a great show. I was thrilled and simultaneously inspired by the message of Jesus Christ. Some of the cast, such as Jesus Christ, Mary Magdala, Pontius Pilate, and Judas Iscariot, are still hovering in my heart.I would like to commend the cast that performed, and would like them to continue to persevere. I want to stress the point that our youth are truly talented, but they need opportunities to exhibit their hidden talents. Thanks to Ron and Paul for extracting the best from these young persons. This is the milestone they have achieved by making these young persons work hard for the last two months. We will surely see many more young persons with talents sitting quietly because of the lack of opportunities.Let us encourage our youth to come forward to show their talents in our churches, mandirs, mosques, schools, outdoors, and so on. Our leaders must acknowledge and appreciate the young talents that are at our disposal, and tap same right on time.Rev FrJerri Melwin Dias, SJDiocese of Georgetownlast_img read more

Seniors ace exit exam

first_imgShe promised the district would “intensify our efforts” so that “students in all grades” are prepared to succeed on the exit exam. The exam, a 10th-grade level test on English-language arts and math, became a graduation requirement for all California high school students starting with last year’s Class of 2006.Earlier this year, state education officials announced that the pass rate statewide for seniors who took the CAHSEE this year was 91.4 percent. In the Los Angeles Unified School District, about 84 percent of this year’s seniors were able to pass the exit exam. Most districts do not allow students who failed the exit exam but met all other graduation requirements to take part in commencement ceremonies. However, such students at El Rancho High are allowed to take part in commencement, but only if they meet certain conditions, said Principal Julie Ellis.“If they made an effort in good faith to participate in every activity that we had to strengthen their chances of passing the test, our board agreed to have them participate in the ceremony,” Ellis said. This year, that means that 15 of the 23 seniors who failed the exam can take part in the El Rancho’s graduation June 21, because they took after-school CAHSEE preparation classes in January and February, officials said.If those students pass the exam when it’s given again in July, they can get their diplomas next fall.“The board gave the same consideration to last year’s class, and most of them did get their diplomas later in the year,” Ellis said.At the Whittier Union district, 91 percent of this year’s juniors have already passed the exit exam, officials said.“That means there are 156 more WUHSD students who will be entering their senior year already having completed this graduation requirement,” said Carlye Olsen, the district’s director of accountability, staff development and educational technology.Exit-exam awareness has trickled down into the middle schools, with efforts beginning in earnest in sixth grade to help prepare students for the test, Ellis said.“It appears the CAHSEE is here to stay,” she added.tracy.garcia@sgvn.com(562) 698-0955, Ext. 3051160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Frequently asked questions: From 818 to 747

first_img160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! Frequently asked questions: From 818 to 747: Q: What are the options for the new area code? A: Essentially splitting the region in some way and assigning only one area code in each section. Under this plan, some people would retain the 818 area code while others would change to 747. Another option is an overlay that typically adds a second area code to the same geographic region. Under this plan, multiple area codes would co-exist within the same geographic region. After the 818 numbers are exhausted, all future new phone numbers would be given 747 area codes. Q: Will I be affected by the change? A: All phone users in the 818 area code will be affected. If an area code split is implemented, some users will have to change their area code to 747. If an overlay is implemented, users will be able to retain their current telephone number and area code, but will need to dial 1 plus the area code and the telephone number for all calls. Q: Will the way I dial my calls change? A: No, if an area code split is implemented. Yes, if an area code overlay is implemented. Individuals must dial 1 plus the area code and the telephone number for all calls. Even if you are calling next door or within the same building, you must dial 1 plus the area code and the telephone number. – California Public Utilities Commissionlast_img read more
