A multinational team of scientists met to discuss the current status and future of the white-lipped peccary, a pig-like mammal that lives in Central and South America.White-lipped peccaries no longer live in 87 percent of their former range, driven out largely by hunting and habitat loss. The scientists say the disappearance of this species, which requires large tracts of unbroken forest, could portend the extinction of other wildlife. The white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), a hairy, pig-like mammal that once lived throughout the forests of Central and South America, now only skitters around in 13 percent of its former range, according to a report released in November 2018.More than two-thirds of white-lipped peccary populations are on the decline, said scientists who met to discuss the future of the species in an August 2016 meeting in Belize City, Belize. That’s concerning, they warn, because peccaries are sensitive to hunting and deforestation. Thus, their disappearance could be a harbinger of the future loss of other wildlife.A camera trap nabs a group of white-lipped peccaries. Image courtesy of WCS.“No species represents the plight of the forests like the white-lipped peccary, which is now teetering at the edge of existence due to habitat loss and hunting,” Jeremy Radachowsky, an ecologist who directs the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Mesoamerica program and participated in the assessment, said in a statement. “We need to take immediate action to save Mesoamerica’s last wild places and their incredible wildlife.”The researchers, from the seven countries that still have white-lipped peccaries as well as the United States, surveyed biologists in their respective countries regarding the status of local white-lipped peccary populations. They then shared their findings with their colleagues in Belize, summarizing them in the November report. The results suggest that the animal’s current status as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List should be changed to endangered, according to the assessment. In Mexico and parts of Brazil, it’s already treated as an endangered species under the law.Hunting is a major threat to white-lipped peccaries throughout their range. Image courtesy of Honduras’s Institute of Forest Conservation (ICF) Moskitia.White-lipped peccary numbers are holding steady in only four locations, the researchers found. In one place, the Maya Mountains of Belize, the population is actually growing.Elsewhere, in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Brazil, most populations are dwindling. (Scientists aren’t sure how several populations in Belize and one in Mexico are doing.) Ranching and farming have chewed through large tracts of forest, and roads pave the way for new settlements. They also aid hunters in penetrating the difficult habitats, ranging from the dense forests of the Amazon to the thorny scrub of the Gran Chaco, where white-lipped peccaries live.“Mesoamerica is home to five great forests and still harbors a miraculous spectrum of magnificent wildlife,” Radachowsky said. “However, these forests and their wildlife are at grave risk.”A small herd of peccaries, pictured here in Mexico. Image by Rafael Reyna/ECOSUR.The scientists involved say the report could guide governments and indigenous and local communities in protecting the remaining peccary habitat — and not just for the benefit of one species. They argue that the presence of white-lipped peccaries in a landscape is a sign that conservation efforts are working, since the species requires large stretches of intact forest to survive. And by protecting peccaries, land managers would also be securing the future of other mammals, such as Central American tapirs (Tapirus bairdii), jaguars (Panthera onca) and mountain lions (Puma concolor). What’s more, peccaries play important ecological roles, and some scientists postulate that they’re ecosystem engineers.“This amazing animal turns the soil, feed large cats and controls seedling growth, actually enhancing the diversity of the whole forest,” Rafael Reyna-Hurtado, a biologist at Mexico’s El Colegio de la Frontera Sur and the report’s lead author, said in the statement.Scientists believe that protections for the white-lipped peccary will extend to other species, such as tapirs, jaguars and pumas. Image by Apolinar Basora. But the researchers, all peccary experts who have spent countless hours tracking herds that can number up to 300 animals through rugged terrain, also argue that we should protect white-lipped peccaries for their own sake.“No other animal in the world moves through forests in such large groups,” Reyna-Hurtado said. “If we save it from extinction we not only protect the forest, we give our children the chance to witness a wild herd marching in a single file through the forest foraging for food, even escaping from a jaguar, just as they have done for thousands of years.”Banner image of white-lipped peccaries in a wallow by Roan McNab/WCS.CitationsBeck, H., Thebpanya, P., & Filiaggi, M. It is mentioned that planting trees in village common lands will have negative affects socially and ecologically. There is no need to even have to agree or disagree with it, because, you also mentioned the fact that Cauvery Calling aims to plant trees only in the private lands of the farmers. So, plantation in the common lands doesn’t come into the picture.2.I don’t see that the ecologists are totally against this project, but just they they have some concerns, mainly in terms of what species of trees will be planted. And because there was no direct communication between the ecologists and Isha Foundation, it was not possible for them to address the concerns. Dear Editor,Opinion polls conducted in Trinidad about the Government in June, July and September revealed a similar trend in findings in polls conducted in Guyana – both incumbents losing appeal among voters, with many preferring a third force as a balance to keep Government and Opposition in line. The polls were conducted by the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) in June and July in both countries and over the last couple of weeks in Trinidad. The polls found that the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) Prime Minister, Dr Keith Rowley and his Government have been badly slipping in popularity ratings, similar to the ruling dispensation in Guyana. However, the T&T Opposition UNC-led People’s Partnership has not been making gains unlike in Guyana, where Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo’s popularity is much higher than that of the President and the PM.In both T&T and Guyana, rising crime, widespread perception of corruption, arrogance among some Ministers and Government officials, and a stagnant economy, among other factors, are taking a heavy toll on the approval ratings of the PM (President) and the Government. The TT poll also reveals that the politics over the last several months has been static, with voters disgusted at both major political parties, not significantly different from Guyana. The ruling PNM and Opposition UNC are unpopular even in their own traditional heartlands. But in Guyana, the PNC remains the preferred choice among Africans and mixed Guyanese, while the PPP has re-attracted disgruntled Indians and Amerindians but that may not be enough to capture the Government. Support for the PPP among Africans remains stalled. However, in a free and fair election, the PPP could triumph because of the rising unpopularity of APNU and the AFC.In the latest T&T poll, 96 per cent of those polled said crime was a major concern for them, up from 95 per cent in July and 93 per cent in June. Similarly, in Guyana, almost everyone was concerned about crime in June and July. The latest poll in T&T also finds “perceived corruption” to be a worrying matter among the population, with 69 per cent saying corruption is a serious worry, up from 63 per cent in July and 54 per cent in June. In Guyana, the overwhelming majority of respondents in the July poll felt several Ministers in the Government were very corrupt.Another worrying trend in both nations is the rising trend of the percentage of respondents who say they are worried that the country is not moving in the right direction – in T&T 89 per cent now up from 85 per cent in July and 83 per cent in June. In Guyana, the figure was an alarming 75 per cent in July.In terms of approval rating, the PNM Government has been tanking – 33 per cent now continuing a downward trend in June and July of 37 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. Voters are very disappointed with the broken promises of the PNM, as they are also with the coalition APNU/AFC in Guyana, especially with regards to constitutional reforms. The approval rating of Dr Rowley is 40 per cent in September, down from 41 per cent in July and 42 per cent in June. Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s rating is marginally better at 42 per cent and has not seen much shift from June and July (43 per cent). In Guyana, President Granger’s approval rating in July was 42 per cent and Nagamootoo 39 per cent and the coalition APNU/AFC Government was 34 per cent. The approval rating for Opposition Leader Jagdeo was 52 per cent. In terms of popular support, none of the parties has attracted majority support. The PNM and UNC are at 30 per cent each, with people clamouring for a new political dispensation. In Guyana, many who voted for the AFC have become disenchanted with it, but are not gravitating towards the PPP. A significant number of voters in Guyana want a new force similar to the unaligned voters in Trinidad. The poll also queried voters on other issues in Guyana. The findings will be released in a subsequent report.Yours truly,Vishnu Bisram

Stolen overnight Sept. 9, the buckskin gelding is worth several thousand dollars because of his training, Dantice said. The horse’s most distinctive feature is the gray hair mixed in among its predominantly black mane and tail, the detective added. Anyone with information on the stolen horse was asked to call Dantice at the Palmdale sheriff’s station at (661) 272-2464. AGUA DULCE – A horse thief struck in Agua Dulce. A 3-year-old quarterhorse named Scotty, being trained as a roping horse, was rustled from the corral behind his owner’s house. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Detective Daniel Dantice, working his first stolen-horse case, believes that whoever stole Scotty had planned out the theft and is someone familiar with horses. The thief didn’t take Scotty’s saddle or other gear, though it’s unknown whether the horse was loaded into a trailer or simply led away, Dantice said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. The companies said debt, transaction and integration costs would add $400 million to the deal, pushing the total cost to about $2.2 billion. CB Richard Ellis said it plans to issue $2.2 billion of term loans to finance the transaction, and will also amend or refinance its existing $600 million revolving credit facility. In addition, it plans to sell Trammell Crow’s 20 percent stake in British real estate services provider Savills PLC. Analysts say U.S. office markets have rebounded from a slump earlier this decade, and foreign pension funds are pouring money into buildings – then hiring firms to manage their property. The trends have helped raise the value of firms such as Trammell Crow, whose shares more than quadrupled since early 2003. “The bet CB is making is that the asset-management business should continue to grow because there is going to be more money going into real estate,” said James Feldman, an analyst with UBS. With nearly 50 offices in the United States, Trammell Crow employs about 6,200 workers and posted 2005 earnings of $59.4 million on $896 million in sales. CB Richard Ellis employs about 14,500 workers and posted 2005 net income of $217.3 million on sales of $2.91 billion. Chairman Richard Blum owns 14 percent of the firm through his Blum Capital Partners. The deal had been rumored for more than a year. It would be CB Richard Ellis’ biggest deal, surpassing the $415 million purchase of Insignia/ESG in 2003. Once the transaction is complete, the combined company will have 21,000 employees and provide services to more than 85 percent of the Fortune 100. White said Trammell Crow’s development business will be run as a wholly owned subsidiary under the Trammell Crow brand name. Robert E. Sulentic, chairman and CEO of Trammell Crow, will join CB Richard Ellis as group president of the development and investment business. “Our shareholders are going to come out great, and our clients will be well-served with the global nature” of CB Richard Ellis, Sulentic said in an interview. “Both companies would have done well on their own, but they’ll do better together.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Brett White, chief executive of CB Richard Ellis, said his company would control about 10.5 percent of the market for commercial real estate services. He said any additional gains would be difficult in the industry, in which his company competes against thousands of local firms. White said the agreement doesn’t block another bidder from trying to buy Trammel Crow, although he said the deal includes a break-up fee. He declined to disclose the fee amount. Trammell Crow shareholders will have to approve the deal first. The companies expect the sale to close by year end. DALLAS – CB Richard Ellis Group Inc., the world’s largest commercial real estate services company, said Tuesday that it will grow bigger in the fragmented industry by buying rival Trammell Crow Co. for about $1.79 billion. The deal would create a company with about $4.4 billion in annual revenue, more than 10 percent of the commercial real estate market, and let CB Richard Ellis tap Trammell Crow’s list of blue chip corporate clients. El Segundo-based CB Richard Ellis said the acquisition would increase its earnings per share in the first year by more than $65 million, or a low-teens percentage, partly due to selling Trammell Crow’s stake in a British real estate firm. The purchase price of $49.51 per share in cash represents a 27 percent premium over Trammell’s closing price Monday.

Mahatma Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” As our worlds and the people in it adjust, organizations must, too. HR professionals are in a great position to be a catalyst for change in our workplaces.Right now, our world is becoming increasingly fluid, as Cecile Alper-Leroux mentions in her blog post Going with the Flow. HR is in the driver’s seat as workforces experience both an increase in worker confidence and more fluid people. A noticeable increase in employee quit rates may be due to these changes, and it is more important than ever for HR to make adjustments based on societal changes to attract and retain the best people. If HR doesn’t create policies and practices that are as fluid as the people in their organizations (or the people they want in their organizations), then it’s unlikely employees will bring their best, most productive, happy, and “authentic” selves to work. And establishing these policies often begins with recruiting. As a millennial who recently underwent the end-of-college job search, I noticed that many current policies and practices tried to fit applicants, employees, job descriptions, and benefits into categories that might not support the entire population or consider extenuating circumstances. As an additional concern, improperly written job descriptions can severely limit both the scope of the role and those interested in applying for it. According to Human Resources expert Susan Heathfield, poorly constructed descriptions can “put people back into the organization chart boxes [HR has] been asking them to break out of for years by damaging speed, flexibility, and forward motion.” By removing barriers in job descriptions, organizations can communicate current responsibilities and skillsets while allowing employees to grow. Also consider that according to The Atlantic and an 18-month-long Ernst & Young study, organizations are missing out on fantastic candidates who have the skills but may not have the required experiences (like college degrees). Applications and jobs that require degrees may discourage top candidates from applying even though they may be perfect for the job and organizations. EY instead recommends pre-employment tests to determine whether a candidate has the demanded skillset. Finally, it’s important to review whether company benefits are in line with the organization’s desired culture. US New and World Report shares mutually-beneficial, future-oriented benefits that both current and future employees and organizations can employ. Telecommuting and telephone doctor visits are two benefits that are becoming increasingly popular among many organizations.People are no longer easily definable. They are an amalgam of identities, personalities, experiences, educations, thoughts, ideas, feelings, and more. HR professionals are in a powerful position to help organizations succeed not only in the present, but also in the future. This means taking care of their employees – and not just the ones that fit into preconceived boxes. It means ensuring people have the tools they need to succeed both at work and at home. (Yes, at home. Did you check your work email when you got home last night?) People are changing. Work is changing. Society is changing. HR, business leaders, and organizations must change, too.The good news? With a little analysis, planning, and persuasion, HR can create the change they wish to see in their companies.
“We encourage and ask that everyone be aware of their surroundings while they’re in the city, and immediately report any suspicious activity, no matter how trivial it may seem to be,” LeValley said.Monday evening’s hotly anticipated all-SEC title game between the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama was already being treated as a high-level security event, so the president’s visit won’t imply much additional security, LeValley said.College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said the stadium already requires fans to comply with stringent security. He said he hadn’t heard from the White House about any additional measures as of Thursday afternoon.Kendrick Lamar, an outspoken critic of Trump, is scheduled to perform at half-time of the game just outside the stadium, prompting speculation the Compton rapper could fold some sort of demonstration into his performance. The performer referenced the Trump campaign’s alleged ties with Russia in a track from his most recent release, the critically acclaimed Damn, which is nominated for Album of the Year at this month’s Grammys. In The Heart Part 4 he says: “Donald Trump is a chump, know how we feel, punk / Tell ‘em that God comin’ / And Russia need a replay button, y’all up to somethin’”.The contest will be held in downtown Atlanta, in the congressional district of US representative John Lewis, a Democrat and a civil rights icon.Trump tweeted last year that Lewis’ district was “in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested)” – a claim hard to match with the facts. Atlanta’s economy is growing rapidly, and while crime and poverty remain higher-than-average, the district is home to several Fortune 500 headquarters, prestigious universities and the nation’s busiest airport.Trump’s tweet came after Lewis announced he would skip Trump’s inauguration, saying he didn’t consider him to be a “legitimate president” due to Russian interference in the election.Trump’s visit comes almost a half-century after President Richard Nixon attended the 1969 showdown between No1 Texas and No2 Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. After Texas won 15-14, Nixon visited with players in the locker room and presented Texas coach Darrell Royal with a plaque declaring Texas the national champion. The president thrust sports onto the front line of the culture wars when he targeted NFL players who have kneeled during the national anthem in protest of racial injustice during a speech in Alabama in September, challenging the league’s owners to release anyone who engages in the movement started last year by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The episode kicked off an unprecedented wave of protest across sports. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player “No.9’s an important player,” Conte said at the Amex Stadium in Brighton. “I want a player to be a point of reference for our team. Today I’m satisfied for the work, for Batshuayi’s job.”For sure in this period it is not simple, it’s not easy for the players — especially for the players who want to go on loan. It’s not simple but at the same time in my head there is the idea to work with these players and to continue to work with all these players.”As I said during the press conference, I’m very happy to work with this group of players because they show me in every moment a great commitment, they show me they want to do what they want in the game.”Batshuayi is a Chelsea player and we are working with him very hard in the same way that we are working with [Alvaro] Morata, we are working with [Eden] Hazard, Willian and Pedro and now with [Ross] Barkley.”For me, Michy is a Chelsea player and in my mind there is the will to continue to work with him and to try to improve. Then I don’t know if the player decides to take other solution or if he wants to play with regularity.”You don’t know, it can happen. But at the same time in my mind there is tomorrow to continue to work with all my players and try to improve everyone. I think if you are in a team like Chelsea, before you arrive in this type of team you know you have to challenge and this is a big challenge.”You find a lot of good players. Otherwise you decide to stay in a medium team or low team and probably you can play every game. But I think that every single player that decides to come to Chelsea, they must be prepared to have this type of challenge.”Meanwhile, Chelsea have a young player who is breaking the mould and earning game time in Andreas Christensen. The 21-year-old suffered a collision of heads with Brighton defender Shane Duffy on Saturday. He was substituted off in the middle of the second half after initially coming back on, but it is understood to be just bruising and not a concussion.Conte confirmed that Christensen would return to training as normal on Sunday as Chelsea prepare to face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal on Wednesday. He also thinks Christensen could look to the man who replaced him, David Luiz, to improve his passing range.”I think from the start that Christensen has improved in a fantastic way,” Conte said. “I think there is only one word, this is improvement. Work, work and work. This player — despite he is a young player, he’s only 21 years old — I think he could be come a really important defender, not just for Chelsea. “The important thing is to continue to be humble, to continue with the will to improve, with the will to work, but I’m pleased with the improvement. I think he has to improve a lot with the ball.“He has a lot of space for improvement, to have more personality like David Luiz. Luiz with the ball is important because he has great personality and in this way [Christensen] can improve a lot.”He’s ready tomorrow for the training session. The referee saw the head against head, and then he saw the player touch his head, and for this reason he thought not to force but to suggest a substitution. The player didn’t agree, but I repeat when you have a player on the bench like David Luiz and you’re winning 2-0, I prefer to make the substitution.”I was a simple contusion [bruise], and the player is OK. If we had to play another game now, he would be ready.”
